Supporting Vendors

We offer some of the
most excluded people in the country the unique opportunity to take control of their
lives by earning a legitimate income. The decision to sell the magazine is a
positive step towards independence - vendors must take charge of their sales,
manage their finances and develop the skills required to deal with the public.
However we recognise that this process is just the beginning of their journey away
from homelessness. For this reason The Big Issue Foundation supports vendors as
they address the issues which have led to them to a life on the streets, as well
helping tackle the harsh reality of that life.
It’s an existence
which takes its toll, and there are relatively few vendors over the age of 50 as a
result. The advantages that are offered to you and I can often exclude those who
are most in need. Hundreds of vendors are not registered with a GP. 1 in 3 three
are mugged for their takings. Half of have considered suicide.
The
Foundation has met and worked with over 10,000 vendors since 1995. We believe that
homelessness is unacceptable and that self-help and self-belief are priceless.
Happiness is not just about earning an income, or indeed having a home. We
are often the last door that someone knocks on and we are behind it to help. The
Big Issue Foundation builds around the unique trust which homeless people establish
with through selling the magazine to connect vendors with the vital support and
solutions that will help them continue to rebuild their lives and journey away from
homelessness.
Our Vision is to extend our support to vendors throughout
the UK and in doing so to create a brighter future in which vendors are happier,
healthier and safer.
