18 years, 18 miles - first Big Walk hits London!
Saturday 21st of November 2009 Last night saw
242 wonderful walkers take to the streets of London in support of The Big Issue
Foundation! The first ever Big Walk formed part of The Big Issue's
18th birthday celebrations and involved participants walking 18 miles through
the night in recognition of the milestone anniversary. The route took in
some of London's most iconic landmarks, including St Paul's Catherdral
and Trafalgar Square. Despite the cold weather the atmosphere on the
night was fanatstic and the walkers received moral support from the
many Big Issue vendors who volunteered their time on the night. The event
was supported by The House of Ste Barnabus, The Roundhouse and the London IMAX, all
of whih opened their doors to provide walkers with refreshements and a break from
battling the elements. Speaking immediately after the walk event coordinator Jonathan
Hunt said; "The walk was a great success, we had over 200 people join us to
help celebrate 18 years of The Big Issue and raise much needed funds for The Big
Issue Foundation. The walkers have raised over £34k, which is amazing, but we
are still looking for further sponsors so we can reach our target. We are
hoping to raise enough money to run our London Outreach programme for a year.
I’d like to say a massive thanks to all those who turned up to support us and
walked 18 miles through the cold night. Lets hope next years work is such a great
success!" To find out how you can get
