Wedge Card launches biggest scheme to date
Thursday 18th of March 2010 Wedge Card, the local loyalty card scheme brought to you by the people behind The Big Issue is to launch its biggest scheme yet in The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea on March 24th. Over 550 shops have joined the scheme and become 'Wedged-up', and 150,000 cards are due to be distributed to local residents, including 60,000 to local employees, students and anyone involved in the Borough. From March 22nd-28th the Wedge team will be hitting different areas of the borough distributing delicious hand baked cookies (10,000 to be exact!), mini Wedge Card key fobs, and signing people up to the Card. Local residents and shoppers will also be able to hail free rides from a Wedge Card stop to their favourite independent shops with the Wedge Taxi. Kensington and Chelsea resident and Wedge Card fan David Cameron today welcomed the arrival of Wedge Card to his local area saying; "I’m a big fan of the Wedge Card and I’m delighted that it’s coming to Kensington and Chelsea. We all know how much our small shops bring to our local area. They help to shape the character of the communities we know and love. But the trouble is that while we all value our local shops and complain when we lose them, too often we forget to use them ourselves. And if we don’t use our small shops, we lose them to the impossible competition of big supermarkets and convenience stores. That’s why the Wedge card is such a fantastic, practical idea.
I see it as being a bit like a loyalty card – except that this one isn’t about loyalty to big companies or supermarkets, it’s about loyalty to your local area. The local card-holder wins because they get all sorts of discounts. The local shopkeeper wins with the extra business the cards bring in. And local communities win, because the cards help to keep our streets alive with small, independent businesses. It’s exactly the kind of smart, useful idea we need for local communities to really thrive.
I wish the latest Wedge card every success and hope to see them spreading right across the country before too long."
