Join us for our third annunal Big Knitathon! So far nearlly 2000 knitters have got their needles out in support and raised over £20,000 over the past two years.
In previous years we've asked knitters to knit squares that have been sewn together to make a gigantic blanket. This blanket is something that we can use at our Sleep Out events as it really helps to give a sense of pulling together to support people who are homeless, plus it looks great on the night and in photos! The blanket has now reached the size where if it gets much bigger it will be too heavy to use, so this year we’re setting a new challenge.
The Big Knitathon in 2014 is all about getting together to knit small items for other people. You can knit whatever you like, vendor Sam is hosting hers on the street in Covent Garden, and thanks to our friends at Hobbycraft we will have a few great patterns for you wherever you are!
We’d love you to get sponsored again for the time you are knitting, make it a marathon knitting session if you can! And we’d like to encourage you to get donations from your friends and family for the items you create, you can sell them as Christmas gifts or take orders in advance, but all the money you raise will help us to support Big Issue vendors over the harsh winter season.
Knitting is so much more fun when you get together in a group, so this year we have teamed up with Streetlife, a social network for local communities, to make getting your group together even easier. It’s free and easy to sign up and start a conversation on Streetlife to find knitters in your neighbourhood and invite them along to your event!
Joining in is easy, whether you’ve been knitting for years or just picked up your needles, you can take part in an event in your area or hold your own. If you’d like to find out more then request an information pack and we’ll send it out to you. When you register to hold a Knitathon we’ll send you great knitting patters, ballons, ideas and loads more! Ideas include getting sponsored per hour of knitting, donations in return for knitting lessons, raffling off knitted items or holding a cake sale for your fellow knitters. When you register we can add you to our map if you like so that you can get your neighbours involved too!
The money you raise will help us to fund our Vendor Services team who enable vendors to move away from homelessness and overcome the health, money, housing and other personal issues that surround it.
