On the Night 2019

If you are registered to join us for The Big London Night Walk, all of the essential information you need is below.

The Big London Night Walk will start and finish at Shoreditch Town Hall.

Registration will take place between 8-9pm and you will be given your registration time closer to the event.

We anticipate that walkers will finish between 1am and 4.30am. You can read information about The Night Tube here for your journey home, but the venue will also remain open until mainline trains re-open.

The Route

We will visit 3 rest stops along the way where there will be toilets, drinks and snacks. Here you can recharge your batteries ready for the next stage of the walk. The rest stops are:

Start and finish – Shoreditch Town Hall - 380 Old St, London EC1V 9LT (nearest tube Old Street, exit subway 1)

Rest Stop 1 – Haverstock School - 24 Haverstock Hill, Chalk Farm, London NW3 2BQ

Rest Stop 2 – University of Westminster, Marylebone Campus - 35 Marylebone Road, London NW1 5LS

Rest Stop 3 – St John’s Church, Waterloo – St Johns Church, 73 Waterloo Rd, Lambeth, London SE1 8TY

Walking Speed

Everyone will be departing Shoreditch Town Hall between 9.40-10.00pm. We expect that the fast wave will begin to arrive back at 12:30am, the middle wave will begin to arrive back from 2.30am and the last wave will arrive back from 4am.

These times are all dependent on how long you choose to stop at rest stops, as well as how constant your speed is, but hopefully will give you an idea of which wave you would feel most comfortable in.

Route map

You can find the route here, and you will also get a printed map of the route on the night.

Weather and dress code

We recommend that you check the weather forecast on the day and make sure you dress appropriately.  Comfortable, (not brand new) walking shoes are recommended. We will also be providing everyone with a Big Issue Foundation branded high-vis vest. We strongly suggest wearing a jacket under this, plus plenty of layers and waterproof clothing.

Refreshments and breakfast

Refreshments will be provided at the start, finish and each rest stop, however we also recommend that you carry a bottle of water with you and have a meal before you arrive. A light breakfast will be provided at the finish.

As the walk will finish in the early hours, it is important to plan your route home in advance. You are welcome to stay at Shoreditch Town Hall until 5.30am once train stations have re-opened. The TFL website can help you plan your journey home, and a lot of tube lines now run throughout the night!

The nearest stations are Old Street, Subway 1 (Northern Line), Liverpool Street (London Overground & TFL Rail, Central, Circle, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan) and Shoreditch High Street (Over ground).

What to bring

When you arrive, you will be provided with a Big Night Walk high vis jacket and a wristband so you can be identified as a walker at each rest stop. There will be refreshments provided at the start/finish and at each rest stop.

Other important items:-

  • Bring a charged up phone so you can make emergency calls and tweet on the night #BigNightWalk.
  • Bring some cash as we will be selling Big Issue Foundation beanie hats for a donation of £10 on the night. If you have ordered these in advance, we can post these on the week of the event or you can collect on the night.
  • Please note that you should not bring any offline fundraising money or sponsorship money with you as you can send these to us after the event.

Bags and belongings

There isn’t a cloakroom at Shoreditch Town Hall and it isn’t possible to leave items there whilst you walk, so we suggest you travel light. Liverpool Street Station has a left luggage facility.

Dogs will not be allowed to accompany walkers for any part of the walk.
