Jonathan’s Story

I joined The Big Issue Foundation’s Events and Community Fundraising Team in January 2019 while on a break from my degree at Oxford University and was responsible for supporting the organisation and delivery of The Big Issue Foundation’s flagship annual fundraising event The Big London Night Walk. Working in The Big Issue’s Finsbury Park office in North London, I was delighted to have the opportunity to work on an event that attracts over 300 participants each year and raised over £80,000 in March 2019.

Jonathan AdamsHaving stayed on at the charity to assist with community fundraising activities, including the London Marathon and the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey, it is with a heavy heart that I am now leaving The Big Issue Foundation. At the end of June, I’ll be travelling to China to take part in Tsinghua University’s Chinese History Learning and Voluntary Teaching Program then returning to Oxford for the final year of my degree in Philosophy and Theology. I’m really looking forward to learning about Chinese culture and history over the summer and returning to my studies after a hugely valuable time working at The Big Issue Foundation.

Being at The Big Issue Foundation has taught me a great deal about how a successful charity sets targets and meets its fundraising goals in order to deliver vital work. The passion of The Big Issue Foundation’s staff, volunteers and supporters is inspiring and forms a key part of the wider Big Issue movement, which is made up of people committed to dismantling poverty by creating opportunity.

Having met Big Issue vendors past and present who have been supported by dedicated Service Brokers, it is clear to me that The Big Issue Foundation meets its goal of providing life-changing opportunities. I feel lucky to have met people like André, who was supported into part time employment at a law firm through The Big Issue Foundation’s Corporate Placement scheme, helping him back into regular work.

In the future, I hope to pursue a career working with organisations like The Big Issue Foundation that aim to combat major issues affecting people’s lives, and I will always keep in mind what I have learned while working here.

Everyone here at The Big Issue Foundation wishes Jonathan well on his trip to China and on the final year of his studies.
