TBIF Volunteer from Birmingham Wins Award

This week we offer a huge congratulations to Big Issue Foundation volunteer Gabi from Birmingham who won Rising Star Volunteer of the Year at the Birmingham Voluntary Service awards earlier this month! Here at The Big Issue Foundation we highly value our many volunteers who help out to support the foundation’s important work, which is why we like to celebrate their successes!

Susannah Wilson, Service Broker Team Leader for East and West Midlands said: "Having Gabi volunteering with our organisation has revolutionised the way we are able to work".

In less than a year with The Big Issue Foundation (TBIF) in Birmingham, Gabi has successfully organised an English school for prospective Big Issue vendors, helping them develop the skills they need for re-entering the mainstream and presenting them with new opportunities. Being able to effectively communicate with more individuals has helped The Big Issue Foundation in Birmingham offer help far more widely and effectively to some of the most vulnerable in society, all thanks to Gabi.  In total over 19 people have made use of the school, and numbers are only growing as the programme continues.

“Running our English class means that we are able to provide English classes to some of the most vulnerable members of our society.”

We at The Big Issue Foundation are incredibly proud and grateful to have such dedicated and passionate volunteers like Gabi, and are delighted that she has received recognition for her work.

Gabi’s incredible achievements at The Big Issue Foundation only go to show how much difference you can make to helping eradicate poverty and exclusion and supporting Big Issue vendors in their journeys. Don’t be put off if you don’t have language skills like Gabi- volunteering with The Big Issue Foundation can mean almost anything, from supporting our night-time events such as The Big Night Walk and/or Sleep out to helping out our office based team. So, whether you’re good with people, words or numbers there will always be a way for us to make use of your skills. Not only is voluntary work incredibly rewarding but it often presents volunteers with great opportunities and valuable experience, allowing them to go on to pursue careers they are passionate about.
