Wednesday 5th of September marks the 6th International Day of Charity. You can help us celebrate and raise awareness by donating money, signing up to an event, spreading the word by sharing our messages - education and giving are the essence of this special day.
Every year on this day charities all over the world help to save and improve people’s lives, fighting disease, protecting children, and giving hope to many thousands of people.
To honour the important work that these many charities do, in 2012 the United Nations decided to nominate an annual International Day of Charity as an official day of recognition and celebration – hence the birth of 5th of September. The reason the date was chosen is because it is the anniversary of the death of Mother Teresa of Calcutta. This choice commemorates the tireless work that Mother Teresa did by devoting her whole life to charity work.
Help us Celebrate
To celebrate this special day, The Big Issue Foundation are encouraging supporters to get involved help us put an end to poverty and exclusion for Big Issue vendors across the UK.
We are grateful for whatever way you choose to support us on this special day. Here are just some of the ways you, your family, friends and colleagues can get involved.
Spread the Word
Often members of the public don’t know the difference between The Big Issue and The Big Issue Foundation. Some people don’t even know we exist! This is a challenge we regularly face as a charity and we want to use this day to help raise awareness of who we are and what we do. All day on our Facebook and Twitter feeds we will be sharing some of the amazing things we have got up to over the last year!
Help us raise awareness of the work that we do by sharing our Facebook posts or giving us a RT (retweet) on Wednesday 5th September! #InternationalDayofCharity
Walk 10,000 steps a day for a Week
Get your friends, family and colleagues together and take on The Big Step Challenge for Big Issue vendors! Walk 10,000 steps a day from 10-16th September to help support Big Issue vendors out of poverty and exclusion. Whether walking to work, walking the dog or walking to the shops, your steps will support more Big Issue vendors with their next steps forward, including access to safe and secure housing as well as the business and employability skills they need to progress. #BigStepChallenge
Sleep Out in Solidarity
Join us for the most meaningful night’s sleep you’ll ever have by taking part in one or even both Sleep Outs this year. Abandon your comfort zone and spend the night in the safe but cold, uncomfortable environment whilst raising money to support Big Issue vendors in the UK. The Big London Sleep Out returns to the Kia Oval on Friday 16th November 2018 and on Friday 30th November 2018, we will be hosting our inaugural Big Stadium Sleep Out with our partners, Southampton Football Club and Saints Foundation. Do your Own Thing

Whatever you choose to do, we want to make fundraising to support Big Issue vendors as easy as possible for you. This is why we’ve produced a fundraising guide to give you some ideas of how you could raise money to support our work. We’ve also got tons of supporter-written blogs, where you can hear fundraising stories and ideas from our supporters. A favourite ‘organise your own’ blog is from Phil and Sam, who hosted a garden party.
Take positive action against poverty today by make a small donation to the Big Issue Foundation. Your gift can change the life of a Big Issue vendor today. All the money raised from will go to support the work of The Big Issue Foundation. This may be helping a vendor to find a safe place to live, reconnecting with family and loved ones, improving their personal health and well-being or training and development that will lead to a new career.
