The Big Issue Foundation has partnered up with Donr to enable supporters to donate to our Spring Appeal via their card, digital wallet service or mobile phone.
This is the first time we have been able to accept donation’s via digital wallet services like Apple Pay and Google Pay.
Our Spring Appeal focuses on the success story of former Big Issue Vendor, Bill Webb. Here is an overview of his journey in his own words:
“My Name is Bill. I was a Big Issue vendor in Bournemouth for six years. But my journey started long before then. I had a nervous breakdown after working four years without any time off. When I left my job, I didn’t just lose my income, I lost my home, too. Suddenly I was homeless.
With nowhere to go, my dog Chloe and I set off on a long trek around the South Coast. Eventually, we found a cave to stay in. We were soon turn away. When we ended up in Bournemouth we were ill, exhausted, and penniless. It was then that we first came across the Big Issue family.
That’s when I started to really rebuild my life. I built up my micro business selling The Big Issue and before long I was promoted to a vendor coordinator. The team at The Big Issue Foundation were so efficient, friendly and understanding. They’ve helped me see a doctor, get treated for Hepatitis C, supported me move into my own place – twice – and even organised a check up with a vet for Chloe.
I’ve taken part in several accredited courses and regularly spoke to nursing students at Bournemouth University about my experiences of living on the street. I’ve spoken on a stage in front of 300 people at The Big London Night Walk kick-off, before walking the 13.5 miles route.
I marked the end of my vending days by giving back my tabard in April 2018. I now have a job as a tour guide at Southbourne Ales. I take groups of visitors around the Victorian-inspired taproom and talk them through the craft beers we make here in Bournemouth. Perfect.
Less than a year later, in March 2019 I won the BH Stars Rising Star Award for my work at the brewery. Thank you so much for helping me get here; thank you so much for not letting me give up.”
There is still so much work for us to do – people in personal crisis turn to the Big Issue for help every week of the year. In the past 12 months, the Foundation has supported over 1,000 Big Issue vendors to try and become financially independent, just as former vendor Bill Webb – the face of the charity’s Spring Appeal – has done. We hope that a successful Spring Appeal will enable us to continue helping every vendor that comes to us for further support.
