‘A Christmas Carol’ For You?

Following a sell-out season in 2011, Simon Callow stars in this acclaimed production of A CHRISTMAS CAROL, which returns to the Arts Theatre, London for a strictly limited season from 29 November. Simon has invited a very special group of Big Issue Vendors and supporters to the matinee performance at 15.30 on Monday 3rd December.

Charles Dickens’ A CHRISTMAS CAROL is one of the most beloved books in the English language. It has become a classic Christmas tale for generations of grown-ups and children alike.

Teen acoustic rock group ‘Carousel’ announce collaboration with the Big Issue Foundation to release the brand new single ‘Big Issue’

Freddie Lampen, lead vocalist from Carousel commented on the partnership "Ourselves and our manager discussed the idea of homelessness and we were all inspired by the consistent work the Big Issue Foundation has achieved over the years in helping homelessness and fighting the cause for people who are homeless across Great Britain".

Jamie and Rob Coakley added "It all fell in place at the right time. After we discussed this very important issue . We happened to have a conversation with a homeless girl who had been homeless for over 8 years. The story was so moving for us and we had this burning sensation to do something to inspire, challenge and raise exposure for the plight of homelessness".

What’s the difference between my shoes and the ocean?

It was the day I’d looked forward to for so long! Ever since the team in Birmingham kindly offered me the chance to open the Big Issue’s first ever night walk I’d been getting more and more excited about taking part in what, for me and everyone else, would be a great moment in Birmingham’s history. After all, I remarked to Emma my partner ''London gets its own night walk surely Birmingham deserves on'' admittedly she gave me the “whatever you say dear” gaze. The truth however is much more stark than my enthusiasm might imply, it not only ought to have one ……it has to have one.

Sand, sea and world record attempts

On a (surprisingly) warm and sunny morning last Saturday, 300 people made their way down to Bournemouth beach for day of sand, sea and world records…

The day started with glorious unexpected sunshine, especially for the middle of October as the Big Issue Foundation’s Big Sandcastle Build got underway. The aim was to break the world record for the most sandcastles built in an hour held by Scarborough at 683. That’s not too bad you might think, but each sandcastle had to be 2ft wide and 2ft high to count in the record attempt. Starting off with a demonstration and some hints and tips from world renowned sand sculpture artists David Hicks and Mark Anderson from Sandworld Weymouth everyone got into position and waited for Stephen Robertson, Big Issue Foundation Chief Exec, to announce the start of the hour long attempt.

Ollie’s Big Brum Night Walk 2012

On Friday the 5th of October, Big Issue supporters took to the streets of Birmingham to raise awareness and funds for services across the Midlands. Big Issue vendor Ollie Bain reports on an amazing night.

“I thought it was really good that people still came out when it was raining. There were people that actually do care about the vendors, because they came out and supported the vendors of the Big Issue.  While I was walking I spoke to a lady called Ruth and had a very good chat with her about vending, my situation, and the reasons why I work for the Big Issue, which I didn’t mind explaining, and that I get shouted and screamed at, even though I’m working. She was very interested in my circumstances, and because we were on the night walk, we had much more of an opportunity to have a proper chat. I class my customers as my friends, not customers.

‘Real Lives, Real Journeys’ Celebrates 21 Years of The Big Issue

On Thursday the 20th of September, Big Issue vendors hosted a special event to celebrate the achievements of homeless micro-entrepreneurs.

‘Real Lives, Real Journeys’ marks an important line in the sand for our vendors as The Big Issue turns 21. Themed around the Olympic legacy, the event showcased some truly inspiring achievements in the face of adversity. Guests were encouraged to engage with a ‘reverse monopoly’ installation, with real places where people who are homeless get by at night and real life ‘chance’ situations.
